Day 7
6-27-08
By 7:00 a.m. all rooms were clean, all luggage packed, and the bus
was loaded. Farwell to Virginia Beach! Most of us were already
napping by the time we stopped at a McDonald’s for breakfast an hour
down the road. From breakfast to lunch was a very quiet bus
ride…more sleeping. We ate lunch at Burger King and drove through
some heavy rain before we left Virginia. As we drove through the
beautiful West Virginia mountains the group was divided between
sleeping and wanting to watch a movie. However, the sound on the DVD
player is somewhat controlled by bumps in the road…we finally gave
up on the movie and just napped and talked and experimented with
duct tape.
We arrived in Beckley, West Virginia late in the afternoon. David
Johnson’s daughter Sarah’s husband Cole’s sister Alicia, met us at
the Howard Johnson motel. She directed us to a hiking trail that led
to a magnificent overlook in the mountains. It was a 1.6 mile hike
out to a bluff over the New River Gorge. Of course, it was a 1.6
mile hike back to the bus. While we were out there David Johnson led
us in some praise music and David Collie led us in a devotion
reflecting on the week and the weeks to come.
Cracker Barrel did a great job of getting us all in and fed in
record time. Back at Howard Johnson’s we had our traditional talent
show in the lobby of the motel. An interesting twist to this year’s
performances involved the necessity to freeze the action every time
the phone at the front desk rang. There were several entertaining
performances. Be certain to ask your students about them.
Lights out at midnight because we are heading home in the morning.
Cville here we come!
