Day 4
6-24-08
Tuesday June 24… Kind of a slow start today. It seems like God is
closing some doors in certain areas, and we are thinking maybe it is
the Juvenile Prison. They told us that they absolutely could not
take us today at all because of other things that are going on. Even
though David Johnson had many discussions in the past months with
the officials at the prison setting up the exact time and date for
us to visit. We started to try moving lots of things on several days
to make the visit happen. But we never came up with a really good
fit, so after praying over the situation it was decided maybe we
should just scratch that off and keep our eyes open to what God had
in store for us. Because of that, we didn’t need to leave the dorm
until around 10:00.
One of the top goals for this trip was group building within our own
youth group, and it looks like we have a great opportunity now. We
found a park close to our next destination and headed there. We
split into teams and did a photo scavenger hunt. Each team had a
list of situations or objects they had to photograph, and creativity
could get them bonus points. After the scavenger hunt, the group had
25 or 30 minutes to spend in the park. This was a pretty cool park
that had a river going through it with a lock so boats could lock
through. There were several folks fishing. They told us it was
brackish water. One man was actually crabbing. He had 3 in a 5
gallon bucket that was a real draw of interest for our group.
Our next destination was Light House Point Retirement Community. The
Lawson's helped us with this contact. I think they actually knew one
of the directors and made a call on Monday night when we found out
we were not going to be able to go to the detention center. Again it
is amazing how God has folks in places to help us out along the way.
When we arrived at Light House Point, we met with Donna and found
out she was actually from Greensburg, Kentucky originally and had
several Milby relatives still there, although it had been some time
since she had lived there herself. This facility was not as large as
Atlantic Shores, but was still extremely nice and seemed like a
really nice place to retire. While the residents were coming into
the dining hall, the youth were able to mingle among the tables and
visit. And while lunch was being served, Salt preformed their dinner
(lunch) music. The Lawson’s met us there and were able to stay for
the performance.
We left LHPRC around 1:00 and were on a tight schedule so we ordered
pizza and soft drinks and ate on the bus. We had to get back to meet
Pastor Stacy to hand out more flyers. That may sound to you all like
a not-very-exciting way to spend a mission trip, but looking at the
trip and trying to see what God had planned for us; I now think that
is one of the main purposes for us this week! If you all could see
how pumped that Pastor Stacy and the church are that we are here
getting their name out to the community you would agree. In the last
2 days we have hung nearly 6000 door flyers. They were mainly in the
subdivision nearest the church. If you were to compare that to
Campbellsville, that is nearly every house in the city! Pastor Stacy
says that he can already see an increase in the number of visits
that have been made to the Cornerstone Bible Church web site. And
that interest is a direct result of our students walking miles and
hanging the flyers on doors! Our God is an awesome God.
We did the flyer thing until around 5:00 and then went to supper. We
ate at a restaurant called Red Robin. There are lots of them in
other states, but not many in Kentucky. I think one just opened in
Louisville around the Mall at St. Matthews. The food was really good
and the sweet tea was awesome, especially after working for 2 hours
in the hot sun!
After supper we met with 25 or so members from CBC and we went to
military housing with the door flyers. We also had several boxes of
Frisbees with the church name and web address on it. There were kids
everywhere and it was cool to see our youth walk up and toss them a
Frisbee for them to have. There were 600+ housing units in this one
area.
After we finished there we let our students have another shopping
trip to Wal-Mart. For some reason those are always popular. We got
back to the dorm around 10:00. After a few housekeeping chores and a
group devotion it was lights out at 11:15. We have an early start in
the morning. All of the youth have been working extremely hard, and
tomorrow they get to have a little recreation time.
