Trip Itinerary

Day 3
6-23-08

Monday morning at Virginia Wesleyan College started at 8:30. Salt folks had a 30 minute practice, and the non-salt folks helped our bus driver Craig clean up the bus some. At 9:00 we boarded the bus and headed off to breakfast. Today we went to McDonald’s. It took us until around 10:15 or 10:20 to all order and eat.

Again we boarded the bus and headed off to Atlantic Shores Retirement Community for Salt to perform a concert. Pastor Stacy and several members from Cornerstone were there to visit along with us. This is a huge retirement area that serves all types of retirees, all the way from fully assistd living with nurses down to those that need no assistance at all. It was good to see all of our youth visiting and interacting with everyone that came out to see the concert. Sometimes young people feel awkward sitting down and speaking with senior adults, but they overcame their awkwardness and gave the residents of ASRC a bright spot in their Monday by having one on one conversation with a young person. The concert and visitation ended around 12:00.

On the bus again… we drove to a Chick-fil-A for lunch. We finished up lunch around 1:30.

We were suppose to clean up along this specific road. While cleaning up we would have big signs for folks driving by to see that we were from Cornerstone Bible Church. But as Pastor Stacy was driving in he discovered that prisoners were cleaning up and mowing along that road. So after a very short thought process we decided not to join the prisoners along that road. However, our wardrobe probably would have matched theirs, because we all wore our orange CBC shirts today. It was decided that we would go door-to-door distributing flyers about Cornerstone Bible Church. We split up into 7 teams consisting of CBC and CBC folks. Each team was assigned a certain part of a neighborhood to cover. We would go door-to-door just hanging the flyers on the door knob. If there were people out about the house, we would speak to them, but we would not knock on the door just to speak. We did this from about 3:00 until about 5:00. This involved a lot of walking and was really more work than it sounds. 30 minutes after we started there came a really hard rain. We were in the middle of a subdivision with nowhere to go to get out of the rain, so we (team 7) kept right on going! Awesome times! Everyone was back together again by 5:30 and we headed to Redwing Park for a picnic.

At the park there were a lot of Cornerstone folks there cooking and bringing covered dishes for us all to eat. We played soccer, softball and volleyball. It was a great picnic, the food was great and I hope Jeanette got a copy of the recipe for the homemade salsa! The park closed at dusk, so we had to pack up everything and leave around 8:30.

We got back to the dorms around 9:00. David Johnson got a call from Paul and Shirley Lawson. They were in town and want to extent their love to us by baking us brownies. What a great way to reach out to us! So they dropped by the dorm with the plate of fresh brownies, and I think they were all gone before the Lawson’s were even out of the parking lot of the college.

The students had free time until 10:30. We have a very energetic bunch of young people who really enjoy their free time. It seemed like when we were doing all of the walking from door-to-door that everyone was wiped out and couldn’t go on any more, but mention free time at the dorm and things come alive in a hurry!

Lights out at 11:30 woo, hoo!!! Except for Cyndi, Jeanette and Lori. I think there is some laundry to be done.
